Ivar Aasen Seawater Treatment

A complete seawater treatment system combining ultrafiltration, sulphate removal, membrane deaeration, and chemical treatment for reliable offshore injection water production.

A Complete Treatment Train, Delivered and Operating

The Ivar Aasen installation brings together the key treatment stages required to produce high-quality injection water offshore. Vulkan's engineering experience covers the integrated seawater treatment train, including ultrafiltration, sulphate removal, membrane deaeration, chemical treatment, commissioning, startup support, and operational follow-up. The installation provides valuable operating experience that supports continued system optimization, troubleshooting, and lifecycle performance.

The Challenge

Seawater used for reservoir injection must meet strict water-quality requirements while being treated continuously at high offshore flow rates. The treatment system must control several factors simultaneously. Suspended particles and contaminants must be removed before the membrane treatment stages. Sulphate levels must be reduced to minimize the risk of scale formation and reservoir souring. Dissolved oxygen must also be reduced to protect downstream equipment and pipelines from corrosion. Each treatment stage therefore needs to operate as part of one integrated process, with stable performance across changing operating conditions.

The Vulkan Solution

The seawater treatment system combines several technologies into one integrated treatment train: Ultrafiltration (UF) for seawater pre-treatment and removal of suspended solids. Sulphate Removal Unit (SRU) using membrane technology to reduce sulphate concentration. Membrane deaeration for removal of dissolved oxygen. Chemical dosing systems supporting membrane performance and water-quality control. Cleaning-in-place (CIP) functionality for membrane cleaning and maintenance. Process monitoring and operational follow-up to support stable long-term performance. The integration between these systems is central to maintaining consistent injection-water quality and reliable offshore operation.

  • Ultrafiltration (UF) pre-treatment
  • Sulphate removal (SRU) membranes
  • Membrane deaeration for oxygen removal
  • Automated chemical dosing & CIP
  • Live KPI capture into Vulkan Analytics
  • Lifecycle operational follow-up

The Result

The Ivar Aasen installation provides a complete operating reference for integrated offshore seawater treatment. Operational experience from the system gives Vulkan practical insight into how ultrafiltration, sulphate removal, deaeration, chemical treatment, and control systems interact during real offshore operation. This experience can be applied to troubleshooting, system optimization, modifications, lifecycle support, and the engineering of future seawater treatment facilities.
