Valhall Sulphate Removal
A long-term offshore seawater treatment reference focused on sulphate removal, chemical treatment, process performance, and lifecycle technical support.
Delivered FEED for its seawater treatment system. It established the foundations of the capability Vulkan brings to the entire fleet today.
The Challenge
For an offshore field with a long operating life, the seawater treatment system must consistently deliver injection water that meets the required quality specifications. A key requirement is reducing sulphate concentration in the seawater before injection. This helps limit the risk of sulphate scale formation in the reservoir and production system, while supporting stable long-term injection performance. The treatment system also depends on reliable chemical dosing, membrane performance, cleaning strategies, and continuous technical follow-up throughout its operating life.
The Vulkan Solution
Vulkan contributed process and seawater treatment expertise during the engineering phase of the project and has continued to build operational knowledge from the system over time. Vulkan’s knowledge of the treatment system supports the evaluation of operating performance, identification of process issues, and development of improvements when required. Operational experience from Valhall has also contributed to Vulkan’s wider understanding of how sulphate removal systems behave over long periods of offshore operation. The scope includes:
- Sulphate removal systems
- Ultrafiltration and membrane pre-treatment
- Chemical dosing
- Cleaning and maintenance
- Performance monitoring
- Lifecycle technical support
The Result
Valhall provides Vulkan with valuable long-term experience in offshore sulphate removal and seawater treatment. The operational knowledge gained from the installation supports troubleshooting, system optimization, maintenance planning, and the engineering of newer seawater treatment systems.
